Mass grave of the 24 October 1960 (in the background) and 24 October 1963 (in the foreground) disasters victims.   Following these accidents, October 24 became the "black day" of Baikonur. Since then there is no launche on that date..  Mass grave of October 24, 1960 disaster of called the " Nedelin disaster ".  The accident occurred during testing of the ballistic missile R-16. The explosion caused by the premature ignition of the second stage officially killed 90 soldiers, engineers and technicians (though some estimates range up to 200). Marshal Mitrofan Nedelin, commander for the Strategic Missiles was among the victims. Despite the devastation, the news was known only 30 years later.
