The accident occurred during testing of the ballistic missile R-16. The explosion caused by the premature ignition of the second stage officially killed 90 soldiers, engineers and technicians (though some estimates range up to 200). Marshal Mitrofan Nedelin, commander for the Strategic Missiles was among the victims. Despite the devastation, the news was known only 30 years later. Officially the victims had died in a plane crash.
